Born in Long Island City, I consider myself a native of Northern New Jersey where I grew up. Living in a true commuter town–Upper Saddle River, the Tri-State-Area afforded a metropolitan mindset. One founded on straightforward-thinking and a results-oriented work ethic.
Learning from my dad (a Manhattan PR pro with US Steel), I became a voracious reader with an affinity for the fine arts, as well. After starting my degree in NJ before relocating to Rochester, I discovered my abilities in English and communication. Finishing my degree up here, it ultimately led to a career in Public Relations, Journalism, Copywriting, and Editing at the corporate level.
Although I’ve come to appreciate this part of what I knew only as “Upstate NY,” I may never get used to the lake effect snow in Rochester. I’d actually never even heard of it. A rude awakening for all WNY newbies. I was hoping for a white Christmas not a white Easter!
As you can imagine, there was a lot of culture shock to overcome. Being so far away from the ocean is incomprehensible to someone who spent her childhood summers challenging waves and digging in the sand. Our family loved Montauk, Ocean City, and most of the shore points. It was all good.
Fortunately, it’s also only about a 5-hour ride back to where I lived. And the shore’s just a 1.5-hour, traffic-jammed drive from there!
