It’s been increasingly hard to hold the line on eating clean keto or even prioritizing weight loss. Lately, I’ve vacillated between morning meditation and nightly binges to cope. But I’m slowly learning how to keep calm and eat cleaner again by seeking more balance. In the light of recent events it’s no picnic.
We’ve witnessed initial disbelief about a global pandemic reach a fever pitch and spread pernicious disinformation into the the body politic in less than 12 months. Many of us had a front row seat while it unfolded on live TV. I’ve never craved crappy carb-laden things to stuff in my face as much as I have this last month.

Junk News vs Junk Food Worries
Have I ordered some pizza to calm my frayed nerves in the days since January 6th? Hell yes! Worrying about too many carbs during this extraordinary time of turmoil got thrown unceremoniously onto the backburner.
I’m slowly starting to get back on track now that a few weeks have passed since an actual insurrection took place. Never mind that we’re witnessing yet another impeachment amid Congressional accusations and deflections regarding responsibility. At least the adults are back in charge, hopefully without further mayhem.
Time For a News Diet?
We now have a new president and our first woman VP (woo hoo!!), but some things probably won’t ever change: misinformation trumps reality for far too many. The seeds of division sowed for years have yielded a bumper crop of partisan distrust and nut-filled stories driving us to panicked distraction.
When we see straight-up conspiracy theories that used to be relegated to the dark web or creepy supermarket rags going mainstream it’s hard to think straight. That’s when I switch to something way less inflammatory and a whole lot healthier.
Truth & Keto Both Matter!
To physically survive ya gotta eat. To separate fact from fiction, you need to check credible sources. You just don’t need to pig out on either. I struggle on a see-saw of succumbing to a yen for NJ-like pizza and binge-watching CNBC. Then I manage to break an 18-hour fast with a cauliflower omelet and do a half hour of Zumba (turns out “dancing it out” to Latin music is the antidote for me!). Balance not only matters it’s truly necessary for staying sane.
And when it’s time to just be still and cultivate gratitude, there’s Netflix’s Headspace Guide to Meditation and Buddhist podcasts to feed your soul. It’s way better than than a lot of alternatives IMO.
A Parting News Tidbit
This last small news bite about a true NJ hero is for all Garden State fans (like me) who value the truth. Read how Navy veteran NJ Rep. Mikie Sherrill is taking the lead to investigate the suspicious behavior and access given to visitors to the Capitol Complex prior to the assault.
“With the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the U.S. Capitol … the country can begin to heal after four years of division and intolerance.”
Representative Mikie Sherrill, NJ-11
